Carlos Fuentes

I am Carlos D Fuentes, and I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a kid, my family did not attend church regularly. When I was enrolled in Wesleyan Academy, a local Christian School, I learned English and met the Lord. Having that seed in me at such a young age encouraged my mom and I to pursue going to Church. We did not know where to go, but heard a church moved to a property next to our home less than a 5-minute walk away. I started to attend that church regularly.

I felt I wanted to do more and became a youth group leader of about 30 teens where we held events for fundraising to help local charities and grow spiritually. After that I moved away to college to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering. Throughout my college journey, I worked to pay my own way and gained professional experience working for companies in Disney’s ABC Television Group, Verizon, Amgen Manufacturing Limited, and finally Intel. I share this because I felt those experiences in diverse industries helped me get a different point of view at handling situations and problems.

In 2016 I had my last internship at Intel and was going through some situations which I needed help in handling but didn’t have the economic power to go to therapy. Using the power of the internet I found Good Samaritan Ministries. I called and was told I had to apply for counseling, and so I did. Soon after, a call came in from GSM and was told I would be counseling with Teresa Stroup. My first sessions were hard and challenging, but it helped me grow greatly and solve internal issues I have and still am working on.  Towards the end of the 2016 summer time I ended up going back home to finish school work with hopes of getting a full time offer and coming back to Oregon. A year later I graduated, relocated to Oregon and as soon as I had a car I started going to GSM and volunteering. My focus has been mostly in the Technologies area as I see there is a need and great areas of improvement where I can be a change agent towards achieving an IT transformation. Specifically, where I can help GSM make the best use of tools available and help the transformation reach all centers available globally.

I feel GSM is my home or safe place which I nurture and would like to take care of it. I have a passion for education and would like to help establish an online education presence for GSM worldwide, so the GSM curriculum is widely available as well as connect digitally all centers to enable collaboration and attending courses remotely. There are many projects and based on the needs we can establish priorities to achieve them. My contribution at this time would be to help bring GSM to another level with regards to how it uses Technology. I am also the leader of the Tanzania Satellite and working on how we can achieve self-sustenance as well as revitalize the projects that are left in the country. Lastly, once GSM achieves that transformation, I would like to train as a counselor and volunteer to help clients as well as teach others.
